A question for

A note

Hi Nigel,

A lot has changed since May 2024. We wanted to reach out personally, not with a generic offer, but with something created specifically for Wheathills.

Thirty four thousand leaflets went out that May, and since then we have been thinking about how to make the next round work harder for a commission that starts at eighteen hundred pounds. Four ideas below. Thirty seconds to see whether any of them are useful, with the detail underneath if you want it.

A full round of coverage across the area, printed and delivered. The ideas below build on it, concentrating on the households most likely to commission and giving people a smaller first step than a box.

Four ideas for Wheathills

A memory box is a considered purchase worth thousands, so the job of the print is to start a conversation rather than close a sale. All four are about reaching fewer, better households and asking them for something smaller.

Distribution · two step

01Start here

Ask for the book, not the commission

“Nobody spends eighteen hundred pounds off a leaflet.”

You already publish the Little Book of Memories, and it is the best thing you could put on a leaflet. Make requesting the book the only call to action. People who would never ring to commission a box will happily send for a beautiful book, and then you have a name, an address and months to sell properly.

  • The Little Book of Memories as the single offer
  • A QR code and a short request form, nothing else
  • Every request captured as a named prospect
  • A follow-up pack by post once they have the book
Distribution · selected sectors

02

Target the money, not the map

“Thirty four thousand doors, a handful of likely buyers.”

Covering an area puts your leaflet through a lot of letterboxes that will never spend this much on a gift. Selecting on property value and household profile instead, across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire and the Peak District villages, reaches fewer homes and far better ones for the same money.

  • Sectors chosen on property value and household profile
  • A wider radius than Derby, since your buyer is not local
  • Peak District and county villages rather than city sectors
  • Half the volume, repeated, instead of one broad round
Distribution · timed drops

03

Lead with the occasion, not the box

“Golden weddings, seventieth birthdays, retirements.”

Nobody wakes up wanting a marquetry box. They want to mark fifty years of marriage, a retirement after forty years, or a grandchild. Leading on the moment rather than the product, and landing in the months when people plan those gifts, gives the leaflet a reason to be kept rather than binned.

  • September and October for Christmas commissions
  • February and March for weddings and anniversaries
  • The occasion on the front, the craftsmanship inside
  • Lead times made clear, since a commission takes months
Addressed mail · your own list

04

Write to the people who already asked

“Everyone who requested a book and never commissioned.”

The warmest audience you have is people who have already been in touch: past clients, book requesters, enquirers who went quiet. A printed letter from you, mentioning the piece they asked about, costs very little and reaches people who have already told you they are interested.

  • Past clients, enquirers and book requesters
  • A letter from Nigel rather than a leaflet
  • Occasions coming up in their family as the prompt
  • Small runs, sent a few dozen at a time
